About
Meet the Maker
I wasn’t taught to sew by my mother or my grandmother. I was 34-years-old and pregnant with my 2nd child, when I first learned to thread a sewing machine. My sewing journey started with classes at the local community college; one sewing class grew to many as joy flowed from this creative outlet. I am no couturier or master tailor, nor is that my ambition. I get to screw up and laugh (or swear) at my mistakes. When I sew, I am present, I am slow, I am intentional. I love the blend of art, creativity, and analysis that sewing and design are. To me, home sewing is freedom.
I started my first sewn product business in 2017, an eco-boutique and fabric shop focused on organic children’s clothing as well as African fabrics and accessories. I strive to be a good environmental steward and a proponent of the Slow Fashion Movement. I appreciate the benefits of high quality and organic fabric and want to make these fabrics more accessible to makers everywhere, one yard at a time. Domestic Phoenix is the evolution of a sustainable brand centered on the home sewist and creating more access and demand for sustainable and ethically sourced fabrics.
